In 1888, nineteen machinists at the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad assembled in a locomotive pit to decide what to do about a wage cut. They voted to form a union, which later became the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Detroit Air Transport Local Lodge 141 is a part of the 375,000 member International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers often referred to as "The Machinists." As an affiliate of our International Union, we are in the mainstream of the trade union movement. We are affiliated with the American Federation of Labor, Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) .

Representing approximately 3,500 members at three airlines at three locations in Michigan, Local Lodge 141 includes members from Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Flint working at Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Local Lodge 141 members work in all areas of the air transportation industry from major and regional airlines to fixed base and charter operations. Local Lodge 141 has two union meetings: the first Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m., and on the third Wednesday of the month at 11:00 p.m. The meetings are held at the Local Lodge 141 Union Hall at 9335 Middlebelt Rd., Romulus, Michigan. Local Lodge 141 is located next to Detroit Metropolitan Airport at 9335 Middlebelt Rd., Romulus, Michigan 48174. The IAM Constitution guarantees every union member these rights:

• The right to first-class membership regardless of Sex, race, or national origin. 
• The right to attend union meetings and to speak freely. 
• The right to nominate members for union office, in the local and international union. 
• The right to vote by secret ballot on nominees for union offices. 
• The right to speak out against any policy or candidate for union office without interference.
• The right to run for any local union office after one year’s membership, for any international union office after five years. 
• The right to receive strike benefits after three months' membership. 
• The right to receive an accounting of all union finances from the local, district, and international union. 
• The right to be fully informed on union policy.
• The right to elect local union delegates to IAM conventions where constitutional changes are voted.
